"Particularly in the early years of the child's development, parents may get different opinions from professionals who view the child in different settings. A pediatrician seeing the child in a busy office diagnoses 'attention deficit disorder'; a nursery school teacher who observes the child in an unruly classroom calls him 'hyperactive' ... a psychologist or psychiatrist ... decides he's very active but not 'hyper' and talks of emotional and family problems; while a neurologist, meeting with the child on a one-to-one basis,... says he is 'normal." (Stanley Turecki) -- When we look at children, should we have an open mind?
"Normally an infant learns to use his mother as a 'beacon of orientation' during the first five months of life. The mother's presence is like a fixed light that gives the child the security to move out safely to explore the world and then return safely to harbor." (Louise J Kaplan) -- This might explain that the secure attachment works.
It
is the last week of the course study. I have been inspired from all the
course works with the help of instructor, and the rich resource provided
by the course. My understand of all concepts learned from the course
has been enhanced at the discussion board with the help of my colleagues.
Simple words can not express my feeling of the progress from all these
sources. Thank you all.
Hello Sara,
ReplyDeleteYour quotes seem to cover the whole nine weeks. It is so true that we need to give our children support by preparing them for the future. We have to give them strength, character,a connection to the world and ourselves ( secure attachment, competence, confidence, and the ability to cope with life's lessons. Good Luck to you!
Sara, I love these quotes. They are very profound. Not one of us has any control of the future, but how amazing to know that we can prepare a young mind to face it. I too have greatly benefited from reading your discussions and blog posts. I do believe each of us has knowledge that the other needs to succeed and become even more complete. You have certainly contributed immensely to my learning experience in this course and I am sure that whichever students you teach in the future, will be able to echo those same sentiments.
